Private lines (also called leased lines) are dedicated circuits between two specific locations. Frame Relay and ATM are cell-switching technologies that allow enterprises to carve out virtual circuits from a service provider's network for WAN connectivity. In both of these environments, it is expensive to provision new bandwidth, and connectivity is subject to latency. However, the "quality" of these WANs is usually quite high as they often employ advanced techniques for congestion control and traffic prioritization that improves packet delivery.
Silver Peak Solution
The following Silver Peak features mitigate the impact of impairments that arise specifically in private line and cell-switching networks:
Network Memory is used in conjunction with advanced compression techniques to reduce the amount of data traversing the WAN. This increase WAN efficiency, which helps to avoid congestion when possible.
QoS is used to prioritizes traffic types, and allocate bandwidth accordingly. This improves jitter and latency by enforcing specific policies that govern how to route downstream traffic.Silver Peak can both honor and set DSCP/MPLS markings on a per-application basis for added QoS granularity.
Network Acceleration mitigates the impact of latency by overcoming the chattiness of TCP across the WAN.
