Microsoft SharePoint is a web-based solution for collecting and sharing information. It allows distributed users to collaborate on documents using the network and a web browser.
Silver Peak appliances optimize the performance of SharePoint much in the same way they optimize other web-based enterprise applications and portals. This is done by addressing bandwidth, latency, and network quality issues that hamper the performance of these tools:
Minimize Bandwidth Utilization with WAN Deduplication
Silver Peak appliances eliminate the transfer of repetitive data across the WAN using Network Memory, a premier solution for disk based WAN deduplication. The first time that an object is requested from the SharePoint server, the information is compressed and sent over the WAN. When a browser later requests the same object from the server, Silver Peak NX appliances recognizes the ‘information stream’ and deliver the information locally.
Network Memory remembers and recalls byte stream patterns, not ‘layer 7 objects’, which is an important distinction from web caches. By operating at the network layer and remaining application transparent, Network Memory™ benefits all applications. This means that when the same documents are transferred across the WAN through various mediums (such as email, SharePoint, and FTP), the end user benefits from the same deduplication techniques.
Improve Latency
Silver Peak uses Network Acceleration tools to improve HTTP performance, including window scaling, selective ACK, and fast re-transmit. This speeds up SharePoint access, particularly when performed over higher latency links.
Packet Coalescing
Silver Peak uses packet coalescing to re-package multiple smaller packets into a single larger packet. This is particularly beneficial for Web applications, like SharePoint. By coalescing a series of short packets into a single larger packet and then compressing both the header and payload, Silver Peak reduces the impact of latency in these types of environments.
Header Compression and Cross-flow Payload Compression
Silver Peak uses crossflow payload and header compression to reduce the amount of HTTP traffic traversing the WAN, improving performance for SharePoint - even on the first transmission.
