WAN optimiser appliances tackle more types of traffic
Wide area network (WAN) optimisation specialist Silver Peak is now offering its products to European buyers. The company's NX Series devices will compete with rival systems from Peribit, F5 Networks, Riverbed, and Packeteer.
Optimisation appliances are designed to boost WAN performance by reducing the network traffic traveling over point-to-point or multipoint links, largely through data compression and by stripping out repeated content and caching it locally.
Silver Peak's Craig Stouffer argued that the firm's superior technology would help it to break into the market. "Other WAN optimisation solutions are application-specific or have limited performance. Our product deals with all traffic, whether TCP or UDP, real-time or streaming, including voice over IP," he said.
The devices have integrated quality of service (QoS) mechanisms to help prioritize traffic so that more bandwidth is available for VoIP, and they support packet header and content compression to reduce use of capacity.
The NX Series is available in versions that optimize 2 Mbit/s, 10 Mbit/s and 155 Mbit/s WAN connections, with prices starting at $10,995 (£6,330 + VAT).
